The most successful 8-bit portable gaming platform celebrates two-decades of existing this month. Nintendo's pride and joy, the Game Boy, first hit shelves in April 1989 and continued to be in production right up until 2001. It was cheap to make and easy to run and Nintendo was pumping out enough games to support it, resulting in it sweeping up a seemingly empty market.
Then came along the Game Boy Pocket, the Game Boy Light, and the Game Boy Color. I of which started on the original Game Boy, and then the Game Boy Color wish i was fortunate enough to find on a plane.
Considering all the technology was backdated, you got to wonder why it was so successful. They took some major steps of faith, consider the Tetris story. It became one of the most addictive and successful games ever, and it originally could easily run at 10 x 18 pixels. The Game Boy mastered portability and kept the cost low, ensuring that everyone could get their hands on one, and be able to go anywhere with one.
In 2001 Nintendo released the Game Boy's 32-bit successor, the Game Boy Advance. 2003 saw the end of the road for the Game Boy, seeing over 118 million units sold worldwide. The Game Boy Advance has managed to sell over 81 million units worldwide.
Nintendo has dominated the portable gaming console industry for two decades, and is quite an achievement to be proud of. Happy 20th Game Boy.
