Activision are back again this year, releasing “Call of Duty : World at War”, the 5th instalment of the already popular Call of Duty series. Developed by Treyarch, who we also behind Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty : World at War takes you into the rugged and gritty action of WWII like never before.

In World at War you have your single player for those with weak internet connections, and multiplayer where you play against others and earn points, in turn going up ranks. You will find the menus easily navigated, for the most part, particularly if you have been an avid player of the series. It’ll feel like coming home to your kitchen, knowing what’s in all the cupboards and thus being able to make that grilled cheese sandwich you’ve been craving all day long. Adjusting your settings is as easy as ever, with the slight exception of player name options. You now have a ‘Battlefield 2 style’, one-profile-per-name system.

Maps Range from the vast plains of Russia, to the ruins in Berlin, from the beach of the South Pacific and to the deadly jungles of South East Asia. You can take a casual stroll through an old train yard, or check out some planes in a deserted Hangar. Some of these maps are huge, and require considerably more tactics than your average “Rambo-style, kill everything in sight!” approach.

Single player tried to take what Call of Duty 4 did so well and duplicate it. Unfortunately however it seems World at War may have just failed to stick it correctly in the photocopier! Needless to say the setting and story is different, but the cinematic story –telling style is still very much the same with its switching back and forth between characters.
One of the new features, previously unseen in the Call of Duty fanchise, is the 4 player co-operative game type, bringing a “no-one fights alone” concept into the game. Co-op would seem to be the fussy middle child of the 3 children of World at War, namely that the youngest child “Single player” seems to need it’s cinematic storyline so as to learn life’s valuable lessons, such as; explosions are bad. “Multiplayer” on the other hand, stays up until 3am playing with his friends, how social! Co-op mode features up to four-players online or over LAN, allowing gamers to experience harrowing single-player missions together for the first time. However with a score system included, Co-op has become more of a competitive than co-operative experience. Therefore from the middle child comes the most addictive edition to the COD basket. Zombie Hunt!

Placed in a room with three of your buddies, you must defend yourselves against the onslaught of zombies, this feature is epic fun. It is based on a level system, so as you progress, more and more zombies begin trying to crawl through windows, gathering pace over time. You have the ability to unlock other rooms to get a greater arsenal of weaponry however with more guns come more windows to defend! It would only be cooler if you could get flamethrowers and alien-style ray guns. Oh wait; you can! Needless to say we spent countless hours on this one feature alone.

Lastly, let’s talk about multiplayer. It’s basically the same experience you’ll find in Call of Duty 4 except with WWII guns. No more Choppers, now you have attack dogs. Bloody Dogs! If you are the one deploying the dogs, then sit back grab a sandwich and let your doggies take you to MVP of the game. If however, you are on the receiving end of the furry beasts, then get ready to rumble! I have been in a position of actually killing 6 dogs in a row, to only be shot dead by some devious soul. The perks system is there as well as the Prestige Mode so you can now play all 65 ranks, 10 times over!

Beside all its blemishes, Call of Duty : World at War is quite enjoyable, especially for those who have followed the series thus far. And after playing Call of Duty 4 for so long it’s nice to go back to a Call of Duty 2 with more weapons and shiny graphics. If you can stand some average game dynamics and remember to back up your profile files often, then you’ll find World at War quite entertaining; and with coop Zombie Mode as well as that endless desire to acquire a flamethrower for multiplayer, then I will say that Call of Duty : World at War seems to be a good substitute for; food.

Worth a buy.
