The Australian Counter-Strike scene saw the Plan B National Cup take place this weekend. In the wake of the collapse of Anything Interactive, B1G League stepped in with little time to arrange the new competition as flights were booked, dates were set, and the community was prepared for an epic showdown.
And what a showdown they received, with 20 teams facing off in 2 contrasting locations.
Saturday July 4th was Day 1, with Group Matches for teams to attempt to qualify in this Double Elimination formatted competition. The Group matches were held at MidCity Internet Lan Café, only recently opened by NZ based lan café MCInternet. Games ranged from easy wins such as Sublime winning 3 times 16-1 or 16-0, to close matches and even upsets such as Klaus winning it over Team Sidewinder 11-16.
Day 2 came around, with qualifying teams getting to play in the B1G League studio at RMIT. Multiple camera angles, graphics, interviews, and a running commentary from Velicoma and chemicalNova; it all made it an incredible arena for the competition. Not to mention that all of this was being broadcast LIVE over the interwebs watched by over 300 people at one time, from all over the world.
From the start of the day it looked to be an event that would be remembered, as Intel sponsored Team Immunity faced off against Rice Rockets winning 16-6. Also facing off against the previous National Champions, Team Immunity, was Melbourne-based Zero Remorse who qualified after beating Team Qlimax 16-3. However iM proved too big a team with them coming out on top 16-5.
Making it into the Finals was the recently re-badged Sublime team. Playing furiously right down to the wire on de_nuke Sublime just missed out on going through with a nail-biting 16-14 win to iM.
Elsewhere at MidCity, previously unheard of team tensioN won against Injected (16-12), Zero Remorse (16-13) and Team Sidewinder (16-8) to go through and meet off against Sublime in the arena. In one of the biggest upsets of the day, Sublime was outplayed on de_dust2 and Tension went through to face Team Immunity. The pressure was on as Tension had to beat Team Immunity on 2 maps, while iM only needed one win. And they secured it on de_nuke with 16-6 being the final score. First prize of $2,000 was presented to Team Immunity, 2nd place and $400 went to Tension, and 3rd place to Sublime.
Overall a very successful competition with positive feedback trolling the forums. Compliments to Michael Woods and the B1G League team with pulling off such a successful event, with calls for more of the same to happen in the not-to-distant future.
