The Xmas Lan Season begins this coming Sunday in Sydney with SGL!

On top of all the gaming that your heart can handle, Atari will be showing off their newest entry into the annals of RPG history: Rise of the Argonauts (based on the Mass Effect engine). Everyone should check this out if they get a chance, it looks amazing.

The facilities will be top notch as usual and your door ticket includes food, drinks, and of course, your chance to pwn all the noobs around you!

Former WCG tournament director and SGL organiser Alex Walker took time out to talk with netGameRadio about the upcoming SGL!

Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions Alex, but before we go into the details of this current SGL, can you give us a quick run-down on the history of the SGL?

SGL was started by previous event organisers who have been running LAN events since the late 90's. We're actually currently building up a history from when it started for publication on our website, so I can't answer this right now! Sorry :P

Fine Then! The seats for the event went like hot cakes, with 360 seats now taken, is there anything at this year's SGL for those who missed their chance to register?

There's plenty of things at this SGL, but before we get into that here's a quick note: if you've missed out - don't fear! We're going to hold another SGL in January, so you'll get your share of gaming action!

As for what's on offer, SGL always has a great line-up of games to provide. Being one of the largest LAN events in Sydney, and certainly one of the oldest, we have a robust Gigabit network complete with dedicated servers; Far Cry 2, COD4, COD5, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2 and Unreal Tournament 3 will all be on offer and that's just the dedicated servers! SGL has a steady line-up of tournaments, with Unreal Tournament 3, Call of Duty 4 and the Defence of the Ancients WC3 custom map all featuring at every SGL. This time around we're running console tournaments as well, with a 4v4 Halo 3 Team Deathmatch competition.

Not only that, but we've secured some support from big companies as well. Atari will be coming down to show off their new RPG Rise of the Argonauts on the day, which people will get the chance to play. EA will also be supporting the event with a Red Alert 3 competition, which is sure to go off. There's also Hot-Seat competitions, where we set up a console for general use and throw on a game for everyone to play. Best gamer out of the lot wins a decent prize.

$25 will get you lunch and dinner plus all the gaming you can handle in a friendly social environment on the fastest LAN around. If you're not there, you ARE missing out - so make sure you register!

The gamers obviously love it, what do you think sets the SGL apart from other LAN's in Australia?

The size, venues and the long running history of SGL all contribute to the success of the event. LANs are nothing if not for the networks that they run on; good equipment takes time to build up and is almost always expensive if you're paying for it yourself.

Infrastructure is one thing, another part is that longevity has helped create a community of regulars who are dedicated and loyal to SGL. Without them, the LAN would be a shadow of what it is, and could have died years ago. Their continued support allows us to attract new people, show them what a great time they can have at a LAN even in this age of easily accessible broadband (by Australian standards, anyway). Everybody wants to contribute to SGL, and they want to see it do well. That's the heart and soul of the event right there, and that's worth its weight in gold.

There are some big name sponsors on board for the event, will we see any goodies for the gamers?

Atari, on top of showing Rise of the Argonauts, are providing some copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 to give away. Also, Logitech have some great prizes to give out for raffles and competitions. Thermaltake are on board offering up some of their quality cases as prizes and AMD are putting up their top-of-the-line processors to give away. If that isn't enough, Symantec are also sponsoring the event throwing Norton Antivirus 2009 out to the gamers!

Organising such a massive LAN like SGL can't be easy; do you have any tips for gamers wanting to host their own LAN parties or events?

Planning ahead of time is really the key. Gamers, in the worst case scenario, can find their own ways of making fun, but you really need to have the basics locked down. If gamers can't turn their PC's on, then it becomes a paperweight expo. On the other hand, if the network isn't functional, then its more of an anti-social gathering. So those two things need to be sorted and the best way to do that is to plan ahead of time.

After that you need to arrange structure: what's going to take place during the day, and who's going to take care of that. Who's doing the cleaning and how are you going to bump in and bump out? Have you got all the equipment you need, and have you tested it beforehand? What little things do people need? Is it going to be a hot day? Will people be comfortable where they are? Is there enough for people to eat and drink? What games do people want to play? More importantly, what DON'T people want?

You can't please everyone all of the time, but answering all these questions ahead of time will solve problems later on.

If by chance you've set time in your schedule for a bit of gaming at SGL, what are we likely to see YOU playing this weekend?

Unfortunately I'll be run off my feet making sure everything is running smoothly. When I am gaming though I enjoy a little bit of Red Alert 3, FIFA 09, Counter-Strike 1.6, Call of Duty 4 and Quake Live.

We hope to see you there!
